On Saturday, February 2nd, our first St. Edward's Men's Group will gather in the parish hall at 9am to meet for an hour. If you are over 18 years of age and are male, I encourage you to attend.
Many men feel uneasy about joining a Men's group - especially one that meets in a Church! Men wonder: What is the point? Are we just going to be sitting around in a circle talking about our feelings? Do I really need this?
In a recent Washington Post article, I learned that 25% of married men only have their wife as their friend. This corresponds with my experience talking to men as a priest. Men go to work, support a family, pay the bills, watch television and sports to relax, and go on vacations. We have spent the last forty years teaching men to be more sensitive, nice, safe, manageable and alone. The result has been that men have become isolated and bored. To counter this boredom, we men pretend. We watch sports, movies or play video games where we can enter a more interesting virtual world where we can pretend we are part of some great adventure. We can pretend our shouting at the TV screen will get the ref to reverse a call or we can pretend that we are Rocky, James Bond, or John Wayne. We can pretend to be heroes.
God did not create men to pretend. He didn't create man to be sensitive, nice, safe and manageable. He created men to be virtuous, strong, and to be threat a to evil. He created men to be part of the greatest adventure, the cosmic battle between good versus evil, to join the fight the Kingdom of God is waging against the Kingdom of Satan. And the greatest real adventure of your life begins in the place where you would least expect - in the Church. So join our Men's group on Saturday, February 2nd at 9am to awaken your soul to the adventure that God is calling you towards.
