This Sunday our Confirmandi will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Bishop Dorsonville will seal our young people with the Holy Spirit and unite them ever more closely to the divine life of Jesus Christ. Please keep them in your prayers that they may remain in communion with Jesus throughout their lives. Then, the following Saturday, we will have our children receive their first communion.
In the first few centuries of the Church, when adults were baptized, they were immediately confirmed by the bishop and then received their first communion. However, as the Church grew rapidly, bishops did not have the opportunity to be present for all of the baptisms of infants. As a result, confirmation got pushed further and further from baptism. One bishop was known for his sanctity because he actually got off of his horse to confirm people!
One of the scriptural bases for Confirmation comes from the book of Acts: "Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the Word of God, they sent them Peter and John, who went down and prayed for them, that they might receive the holy Spirit, for it had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit." (Acts 8-14-17) In this Scripture passage, we see that the gift of the Holy Spirit is conferred on the newly baptized by an apostle laying his hands on their head. Today, the gift of the Holy Spirit will be conferred on our Confirmandi by a succcessor of the apostles, Bishop Dorsonville. Please keep our Confirmandi in your prayers that the Holy Spirit will bear great fruit in their lives!
