Today's feast is known as Christ the King. If Jesus truly is King, why doesn't he make His authority felt? In the midst of the suffering and chaos of this world, when we carry our own crosses, we can doubt that Jesus is still in control. We can wonder, "Is the Christian Universe really the best depiction of reality?"
Sadly, we are all too familiar with stories of family and friends who no longer believe that our Universe is governed by Christ. Scripture and Christian tradition no longer form their imagination. For many, the universe is kingless, directionless, and purposeless. In that void, the devil tempts us to become gods ourselves - to create our own reality.
This is why the post-God worldview that pervades our culture has made things so polarized and tribal. My tribe and I have our view of reality and you and your tribe have yours. For a while, we have had the luxury of agreeing to disagree and avoiding the troublesome question: "What is truth?" But that luxury is tenuous. Is there a way to foster a more lasting peace?
The answer is yes. The way is to let Christ be our King. We are called not merely to self-identify as Christian. We are called to let Jesus reign in our hearts. We are called to see reality from His perspective and not merely our own. We need to meditate on His Word in Scripture and Tradition to see the Universe through His eyes.
The way of peace is narrow. But those who walk the way of peace will seek to understand, forgive and love those with whom they disagree. Jesus' way of peace will be like water in our polarized desert. It will give the world hope that a loving God is still the King of kings.
