This bulletin article is at the request of a delightful and optimistic woman named Susan who is a resident at the Larkin Chase nursing home. The first Thursday of the month, I go to a couple of assisted living/nursing homes to say Mass for those who are unable to make it to church. Weekly, many of you bring the Eucharist to those who are in these nursing homes. Your presence and the Real Presence in the Body of Christ brings such joy to those who cannot make it to church. Thank you so much for all of those who serve the homebound in assisted living or in nursing homes.
Jesus Christ spent a lot of time visiting the sick. He was very good friends with a sick man named Lazarus. Lazarus' lack of health kept him from being seduced by the pleasures of this world and would constantly force him to search for God. That search led him to Jesus. When we are healthy, it becomes very easy to forget to pray. This is why Jesus says that those who suffer are blessed because those who suffer as Lazarus suffered often seek to be close to Jesus' heart. Every time we visit the sick, every time we visit someone who is suffering on their own cross, we also draw close to the heart of Jesus. If you are looking to grow in your relationship with Jesus, one of the best ways to do so is by visiting the sick in our parish boundaries. If you are interested, please contact our parish office to learn more.
